Education in Karen State is highly valued by all members of the community. However, the difficulties villagers face in their daily lives, often means that their children can not attend school. The impact of a generation of children not being educated cannot be measured and will be felt for generations to come, leading to the question: Are we building a stable foundation for the future?

Burma has experienced a steady increase of its HIV/AIDS infection rate over the past decade, now taking epidemic proportions. Yet, the SPDC so far has been reluctant to seriously address this issue. In absence of adequate surveillance as well as treatment and prevention programs the disease spreads unabated. If the situation stays unchanged, Burma will not only face a health crisis, but also will see its economy and society unraveling.

The support that tourists inevitably give the regime when they visit is not preventable and conscientious travelers must look carefully at the impacts tourism has on the Burmese people before deciding whether they should visit.
