People’s Voices: Hopes for the Future of Karen Women

While there is no question that everyone Karen person, male or female, is discriminated against by the ruling military dictatorship and controlled by the Thai authorities, women also suffer within their own communities. This articles looks at the gender stereotypes within Karen communities, and ways in which women are oppressed within their own society. It also examines the challenges that all Karen people need to face if they want to overcome this inequality within their community.
Failing to Change the Stereotype: Global Situation of Women and Impacts on Women in Burma

In many societies around the world women are viewed as inferior to men, resulting in women being oppressed within their countries and along their country’s borders if they try to flee. This article examines women’s situations from a global and Asian perspective and how this affects women in Burma. The author also looks at what the international community is doing to break these stereotypes and the challenges they face.
