Given the chaos and deteriorating situation in Karen State, one would think that traditional leadership structures have all but been forgotten. However, this is far from the truth. This article examines village administration structures and the role they can play in mobilizing the grassroots people to bring about genuine change in Burma.

Earlier this year the first resolution about Burma was presented to the United Nations Security Council. The resolution failed to pass, with China and Russia exercising their veto powers. This article examines why China and Russia used their vetoes. It also looks at ASEAN’s unwillingness to act on Burma.
