Burmanisation of Culture: Interference and Denial of Language and Cultural Expression under Military Rule

While a war against Burma’s ethnic minorities is being conducted on ethnic soil, another war is being waged on their culture. The Burmanisation of ethnic cultures is resulting in a loss of languages (both spoken and written), traditional celebrations and customs. The Burman culture dominates Burma’s ethnically diverse population and through force and submission this dominances is increasing. Ethnic communities are facing the loss of their cultural identities as they are submerged into Burma’s homogenized culture – unless something is done.

Burma’s Price Tag: The International Communities’ Response to Burma’s Humanitarian Crisis

While the humanitarian crisis in Burma continues to worsen, what is the international community doing to respond? Burmese groups working inside Burma and along the country’s national borders face funding shortages and western countries continue to shrink their aid budgets to Burma, one must ask: is this assistance adequate and how, without sufficient financial support, can the Burmese populace be expected to bring about political, economic and social changes they so desperately want and need?
