No Celebration for IDPs: The Theft of Cultural Identities

As IDPs flee their homes in search of safety, they leave behind their belongings, farms, food supplies and culture. Life on the run challenges ethnic communities to maintain and preserve their traditions and celebrations, many of which are foregone in order to survive. Yung people are growing up without being aware of their culture, leading many people to worry not only about daily survival, but about the theft of their cultural identities.

The Burmese Gem Trade: The Manifestation of Repression

In response to the Burmese military junta’s violent crackdown on peaceful protestors last year many western governments imposed or tightened sanctions against Burmese gems. Despite these efforts, gems of Burmese origins are still creeping into western gem markets, with profits from their sales funding the military regime and their cronies. This article examines the effectiveness of sanctions on the gem trade and the need for regional countries, in particular ASEAN and China, to support similar gem restrictions.
