Information for Action

The objective of Information for Action is to document systematically for analysis of events past and present through the Documentation Centre in order to plan for a better future. This will focus on information for the internal movement and for external supportive campaigns.

Whilst information is power, it takes many projects to be able to create the information. Each project has their own aims and objectives that directly connects to and supports Burma Issues' organizational and movement aims and objectives.

The Documentation Centre provides a base for information for the other projects. People working on the project collect and store information about the situation in Burma and other relating materials in a database in Bangkok. The purpose of collecting the information is to analyse the conflict, find root causes, and building lasting peace in the region.

But the Doc Centre does not work alone. It receives information from many different sources, including the Border Channel Offices project and Thai Research . The Thai Research project has its own Thai database, but it also raises awareness among Thai people about the democratic struggle in Burma by distributing information and participating in local campaigns.

The Video project also aims to raise the awareness of the situation in Burma. It documents, translates and edits footage of Burma and what is happening inside which can be used to raise awareness in the international community.

Another project that distributes information is the Kwe Ka Lu Newspaper , a Karen language newspaper. The monthly newspaper aims to be a tool for empowerment among grassroots Karen villagers by developing their awareness of local, regional and global issues and by encouraging them to express their views on issues which affect their lives.

The Burma Issues Newsletter is produced by the Research and Publications project. It is an eight-paged, monthly, issue oriented news bulletin, which analyses information on Burma for an international audience. The project also publishes special larger publication for the international community.

The Human Rights Documentation project trains documentalists to go inside Burma to collect information on human rights abuses, as well as train village level documentalists so that villagers can do the work themselves. Collected information is then organised in a HRD database, analysis and sent internationally so that BI and other groups can make more informed decisions regarding Burma.
